? Isn't there already a food pantry in Rhinelander?

The Northwoods Emergency Food Pantry is located at the First Congregational Church. It is an emergency food pantry, not a mass distribution site. It is also referral-based---meaning a person must visit certain agencies to get a referral before access to the food pantry is permitted. Although it has tried to remain an emergency, referral-based pantry, the number of clients has increased and the pantry has responded by increasing the number of visits allowed per year. The Northwoods Emergency Food Pantry cannot expand any further (due to food and space limitations), nor can it continue to meet the need of the growing number of hungry people in our community.                  Back to Top

? Can Rhinelander citizens currently get food donations from any other food pantries?

At least 250 Rhinelander residents are currently traveling to Three Lakes and Monico-Pelican Lake pantries to get additional food. These number have increased to the point that the resources of those pantries are now being strained.

The new Rhinelander Area Food Pantry will open this spring to help take the pressure off the existing pantries, and help support the food needs of the Rhinelander community. One of the goals of the new pantry will be to feed those who have had to travel to get food. By providing a local solution, hungry people will have greater access, and their limited resources will not be spent on unnecessary travel expenses.                 Back to Top

? When will the new Rhinelander Area Food Pantry open?

It is the goal to open the new food pantry on April 1, 2005. It is our goal to start feeding the hungry as soon as possible.                 Back to Top

? What will be the differences between the new pantry and the existing emergency pantry?

There will be several differences in the operational procedures of the two pantries. The policies of the new Rhinelander Area Food Pantry will be established by its Steering Committee after an in-depth review of resources and volunteers has been conducted.                 Back to Top

? What can I do right now to help?

The Rhinelander Area Food Pantry needs your immediate financial support to prepare the new site, and stock the shelves with food. Check out our "How Can You Help" page for more details on how to make a donation or how to hold a food drive.                 Back to Top
